Reviews:

rough and immaturely but it is rather fresh and comfortable (review from amazon.co.uk)
Anton Bruckner
Symphony No. 4 "Romantische"
E-Flat Major, original version 1874
Simone Young
Philharmoniker Hamburg

Recorded in Hamburg, 2007.

1. Allegro 19:54
2. Andante quasi allegretto 18:28
3. Sehr schnell. Trio. Im gleichen Tempo 14:45
4. Finale [Allegro moderato] 18:53

Total 70:01

The texture of Simone Young's performance is heard uncompleted and rough, that is immaturely. But it is rather fresh and comfortable and has colorfulness when the tone changes. Because of the very original version is used in this recording, I wonder.

In addition, I think that the original charms of the 4th Symphony are heard here and there in this performance. For instance, from the blank polyphony.

The reason that the 4th Symphony of Bruckner is called "Romantic" can be caught from the Young's performance rather than the great masters' performances or those that won high acclaims in the past (Sinopoli et al).

For the very first edition of Bruckner's 4th Symphony, there is incomplete innocence, though there is no beauty of the revised edition, that was nobly rewritten and reborn by the composition technology of Bruckner whose age was piled up.

When listening to the revised edition by other conductors again for the comparison after this performance, I think with interest, "Bruckner revised it aiming at the hit. It was good if he left it as the original."
