Performance: Sonics (S): |
This one is terrific! Schubert's 15th is one of the gems of the quartet literature. The Prazak performance is wonderful. Take, for example, the scherzo movement. Listen how they dynamically swell the phrases in the first part - I have not heard another quartet execute this in this fashion but it just sounds so right for the music. This performance is a pleasure to listen to for its 49 minutes. The string trios are much lighter fare which I don't have a great interest in. The Beethoven trio seems to perform them well.
The sound in the quartet is close to ideal. It is close up (which I prefer, especially with chamber music) with just enough room sound to let the instruments breath. Also, I didn't pick up any distracting sniffing, etc. from the players. The timbres are true to the instruments and the dynamics are life-like. This one is near-demonstration quality. The string trios are recorded a bit more distantly but they still sound OK (not as good as the quartet though). Bravo Praga Digitals and the Prazak Quartet!
