What a fine initiative is this first-class recording! The absence of Clara Schumann on CD is all too obvious. Releasing her most beautiful pages for piano, onto SACD what’s more, is all the more welcome. For, it should be remembered that the fate of this young woman, a great artist in her time, a remarkable pianist, but also a talented composer, leaving some forty works, would for musical history be “to incarne the feminine in Schumann.” This incarnation hid, or rather masked quasi-irremediably, a composer equal to her spouse. The result: she became by choice the greatest interpreter of her time, leaving the composing to her husband. She even became the greatest concert performer of the period. Before however, there was a long period of renouncement. The program proposed here has us discover the “Musical Evenings” Op. 6, that are works from her youth first published in 1836, “Three Romances” Op. 11 from 1839, another small “Romance” without opus number, the “Four Fugitive Pieces” Op. 15 composed between 1841 and 1844, and “Three Romances” Op. 21. Pianist Marie-Josèphe Jude gives these pages a remarkable subtlety of tone. Playing on the sensitivity of the musical discourse, she gives the notes their right emotional weight. Both warm and profound, her interpretation revives and reveals the moving talent of an uncommon woman.
