“And so he arrived, this man of youthful blood, at whose cradle the Graces and Heros stood guard. His name is Johannes Brahms ; he came from Hamburg, where he composed in a dim silence, but where an excellent and enthousiastic master taught him the most difficult rules of the art: a respectable and well-known artist recommended him to me shortly before. Even outside, he exhibited all the signs that announce : Here is one who has been summoned! Hardly had he sat down at the piano that his playing made us discover a marvelous land, and without our noticing drew us into an ever more magic circle. ” Thus spoke Robert Schumann after his first meeting with Brahms. An early work dating from 1853-54, the Trio for Piano and Strings N°1 op. 8 in B major would be revised in 1891. But at the time it was composed, the young prodigy, as Pierre-Emile Barbier states in his accompanying notes, “had had enough of the provincial concert tours he had given with Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi. He had already composed three major piano sonatas and come up against critics in Leipzig, the German musical mecca at the time.” As for the Trio for Piano and Strings N°3 in C flat op. 101, it is a work of full maturity. Composed in 1886 and though brief, it shows powerful romantic inspiration. It is a real joy to hear the Prague Guarneri Trio again, especially after memorable Schubert and Mozart discs. Here, its committed playing, of rare evocative force, and its deep and rounded phrasing, offer one of the most beautiful versions of these colorful scores. The “Sonatensatz ” for violin and piano, dating from 1853, which completes the disc is as vibrant and warm as the rest. Recorded magistrally in pure DSD, this Super Audio CD is an absolute joy.
