Performance: Sonics (MC): |
Willem Tanke has here written and performed, as the title suggests, a meditative work for organ. This composition has a large influence from Indian music tonally, if not rhythmically. At times, the organist is required to strike a wooden stick (either against the instrument or a bell) which brings great atmospheric effect. This decidedly modern music is nevertheless very hypnotic and in its own way quite attractive, helped by the dedicated playing of the composer on the late 19th century organ (very different to the enormous French instruments in its modesty and simplicity).
The recording is very clear, allowing the sounds that ruminate around the St. Willibrorduskerk to come vividly to life. An unfortunate side effect is that all the creaking of the building (or perhaps those working close by) are captured with equal clarity, hindering repeated enjoyment of what would otherwise be a most marvellous experience.
Recommended all the same.
