Performance:  Sonics (MC):
After a slightly less inspired effort in Bach: Cantatas through the Liturgical Year Vol. 4 - Kuijken, Kuijken and his team are triumphantly back to their best form.

This, the fifth volume, collects cantatas written for the 11th to 14th Sunday's after Trinity:
Siehe zu, dass deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei - BWV 179
Geist und Seele wird verwirret - BWV 35
Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet - BWV 164
Wer Dank opfert, der preiset mich - BWV 17

Three of these are "conventional" cantatas (could Bach ever really write anything conventional?) but "Geist und Seele wird verwirret - BWV 35" is special indeed; few composers can have included concertante organ parts into their sacred works with such skill and grace as this gorgeous and delightful work here. We are fortunate that the soloist Ewald Demeyere is fully capable of the task and he plays with a pleasing sense of vigour as well as delicacy. The vocal solo team of Gerlinde Sämann, Petra Noskaiová, Jan Kobow and Dominik Wörner are as well-matched and of the typically high standard that has been set in this series. The playing of La Petite Bande under Kuijken's direction is, as usual, beyond reproach.

The recording made in the Schloss Seehaus (Markt Nordheim, Germany) is one of the better efforts of the series without being completely first class.

Highly recommended.
