Performance:  Sonics (S):
A brief note on these two discs -- but maybe longer than a DeSelby.

The Beethoven Variations always give me joy -- which, all things considered, isn't the worst reason for buying yet another disc. So I did not hesitate to buy a different performance by different artists of pieces which I have on sacd already: by Lazic and Wispelwey. Yes, exactly the same eight works.

I do not regret my extravagance. The Guttenberg/Rummel renditions are thoroughly pleasant. But I have one more reason for not regretting this purchase, it has led me to appreciate how utterly excellent the Lazic/Wispelwey discs are! There's good, and there's utterly mind-bogglingly good. My recommendation for the economically-minded is thus to get the Lazic/Wispelwey. But my advice to all those here "with far too much money and time" is to get both, for the music's sake.
