Performance:  Sonics (MC):
Grouping four bassoon concertos of Vivaldi and one flute concerto of Tartini, Klaus Thunemann does his best to provide a light and deft touch to the cloying accompaniments of I Musici. That he is largely successful is testament to his musicianship but quite undermined every time he stops for breath! The tempo choices are not sluggish but the phrasing from the Italian players is not at all what is now considered to be even vaguely stylistic. Fortunately, the purely orchestral passages do not last long and as a memento of one of the great bassoon players of the twentieth century, we should be grateful for the chance to listen to this artist in very natural surround sound.

The acoustic used for the Tartini (not the usual La Chaud de Fonds location) is more resonant and does not help these HIP accustomed ears to adjust to such “rich” music making – sunny it may be but I don’t want to get melanomas from listening! Severino Gazzelloni has several lapses of intonation which are all to clear in this presentation. This leaves only 45 minutes of enjoyable music making but it is more than good enough to have made me return for pleasure several times already.
