This disc opens with the two suites from Daphnis et Chloe - it is a great shame that there is no modern MCH version of this marvellous score (in the completed version) available, although there is at least one of the second suite. The first suite is not the musical equal of the second but Haitink and the RCO do their best for the music. This is not the equal of Dutoit in Montreal nor the classic Ravel: Daphnis et Chloe - Munch (which sounds dated but marvellous for the period) but these are very high standards indeed. The second suite, again, is not performed to quite the same standards mentioned but at least the music is more engaging. Compared to Ravel: Bolero - Boulez, the Ma Mére l'Oye is sadly lacking in atmosphere; it is not poor but compared to the best it is lacking in atmosphere [as the DGG recording will become increasingly difficult to obtain, this is a good alternative though].

The music making takes a real step-down in quality for the ubiquitous Bolero, this time with de Waart and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra - there can be no pretence that these players are remotely as good as their Amsterdam cousins and I would have preferred it that Pentatone gave us shorter playing time than ruin the (slightly limited) pleasure that Haitink conjured up.

The sound is good but with the musical issues not top-drawer, it doesn't matter so much.

Sadly not wholly recommendable.

This was my first recording of Mother Goose and I loved it to bits. I played the LP over and over again, revelling in the lush sounds Ravel had written. Haitink and the Concertgebouw were a good guide with very sensitive playing.

I didn´t like the first suite from Daphnis then and I don´t like it now. It is totally pointless and this is the reason why it is so seldom played or recorded. The second suite is another matter alltogether.

I haven´t heard this performance for quite some time and had high hopes. I was almost drooling over the SACD wishing that it would bring back the magic of 1972. It didn´t quite do that, mainly because of Haitinks literal approach to the music. There is nothing wrong in this performance and the playing is exquisite. The main reason for me keeping this is the playing and magical sounds from the Concertgebouw.

I have heard more high voltage performances in the Danse Generale of Daphnis, more warmth in Ma mere...the Boulez from Berlin is wonderful.

The sound is good with quite a bit of hiss actually. It has a lovely top-to-bottom space and the string harmonics are beautifully balanced by the lower strings.

And I still wish that PentaTone could include a picture of the original LP-cover in the booklet in their reissues.

C'est avec un réel plaisir que nous retrouvons les enregistrements Ravel des années soixante-dix de Bernard Haitink, dans un remastering DSD remarquable. Les Suites N°1 & 2 de Daphnis et Chloé, de trois mouvements chacune et datant de 1911 et 1913, offre une variété de timbres et de couleurs d'une finesse irrésistible pour une œuvre contant l'histoire d'un enlèvement, d'une libération et d'un retour. Ma Mère l'oye, fut composée quelques années plus tôt, entre 1908 et 1910. La partition décrit un univers que le compositeur connaissait bien, celui de l'enfance. "Le dessein d'évoquer dans ces pièces la poésie de l'enfance m'a naturellement conduit à dépouiller mon style et à rendre mon écriture transparente" disait-il à son propos. Quant au fameux Boléro qui clôt ce programme, c'est sous la direction de Edo de Waart que nous le découvrons, avec l'orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam. Et pour l'occasion, rappelons ce que Ravel disait de lui : "Je n'ai écrit qu'un seul chef-d’œuvre, Le Boléro. Malheureusement, il est vide de musique". Dirigeant le légendaire orchestre du Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink se distingue par une fougue, une puissance, tout en mêlant, au discours musical, finesse et poésie. Tout ce que réclame la musique du compositeur français. A redécouvrir et à savourer.
