Performance:  Sonics (MC):
In their myriad of undoubted hits, this Pentatone release falls short of their highest standards.

There is no quibble to be made with the recorded sound; it is natural and beautiful with a good deal of inner detail naturally coming to the fore. The orchestra is also good (if not quite in the league of those who inhabit the finest opera pits) and Spanjaard makes a sympathetic if not electrifying Wagner conductor.

My principal problem is the singing of Charlotte Margiono. She has good diction and a solid sense of drama but her tone rubs harshly against the tonal palette of the orchestral timbres. A powerful voice no doubt but in an "old" way, which despite her relative youth, sounds aged in the unflattering "tired" not "mature" label.

I'd like to recommend this, especially after the sonic disaster that is Strauss: Four Last Songs, Wagner: Prelude & Liebestod - Runnicles but for the Liebestod in a good performance and good sound we'll have to wait.
