In amongst the plethora of Beethoven sonata recordings this only stands out in an unpleasant way:
the recording is so bright and close that the hammers are painful to the ears!
Korstick himself provides illuminating notes but this is not matched by illuminating playing. The phrases seem fragmentary and there is no sense of a compelling journey which can transport the listener from beginning to end. In early Beethoven this is just as important as in later works due to the relatively facile nature of the music. Comparing Brautigam on SACD shows just what is missing, as do past masters like Gilels or Schnabel.
Apart from the battering delivered, the recording is otherwise clear but hardly a positive model.
Not recommended.
