Performance: Sonics: |
P. Martino g, E. Green p, B. Tucker b, T. Brown b, L. Mcbrowne ds, Prestige 1968. From the five tracks two are originals. Brown`s title track East is an over twelve minutes lasting somewhat psychedelic improvisational tune, and Martino`s Trick, a blues. Then there are Petkere`s Close Your Eyes, Golson`s Park Avenue Petite and Coltrane`s Lazy Bird. I did not know Martino but now I love his guitar playing, his clear and warm sound reminds me of Wes Montgomery and he is a great soloist. He is accompanied by a group of perfect jazz men,(most of them I didn`t know either,) rocking up-tempo or ballading with feeling. Although MFSL has done the best, by sure, the sound of the 1968 recording is not perfect – not that bad, but not really good. Nevertheless, I like this record very much because of it`s high standard guitar jazz.
