Performance:  Sonics (S):
Here are three of Mozart's six piano trios in very civilized performances. There is a seventh trio that was completed by another composer though I have never heard that one. The Guarneri trio plays admirably though I would have preferred a little more vim and vigor in this truly classical period music. Nevertheless, the playing is always sensitive and the ensemble is very good. These works harken back more to Haydn than forward to Beethoven's early trios which are more romantic in character than these well-behaved trios. A very pleasant hour's worth of listening.

The sound is in a very dry acoustic which is what I prefer for chamber music recordings (this is the stereo SACD track - maybe mch is more reverberant but I'll never know due to my 2-ch system). Instrument timbres are true for the most part but I do have a few quibbles. First, the cello is a bit reticent in the overall mix. Part of this is due to the scores themselves which really don't feature the cello in any strong way. But I still think it lacks a bit of low-end heft. Secondly, the three instruments don't seem to integrate together very well. It sounds to me like each instrument was individually mic'd (with 2 mis for the piano) and they never seem to exist in the same space. Again, these are minor complaints and don't detract substantially from the overall listening experience. I think this one is worth having.
