Performance:   Sonics:
The sacd catelogue already has a few excellent or better discs and great Chopin interpreters, so this enters against strong competiton..There is an interesting mixture of works and this is also reflected imo in the playing and recording..The tone of this sacd is better that a cd but that diffused quality others have reported on Membran surround is occasionaly evident in the stereo layer..especially the lower end...The venue of the recording doesnt seem to allow the top end to open out as much as I personally would like but expecting perfection on a mega cheap disc is probably a bit OTT.. Mr Ohara is already highly regarded as Chopin performer if not specialist..These performances thankfully dont try to shop NEW interpretaions of inner meanings or great showboating (Polonaise) which is a pretty repetative work.or trying to play it like Liszt......This discs opens with the other longer Polonaise and then contains a nice mixture...ending in the highlight of the disc..This last piece shows why he is highly regarded and is in the near perfection class..The recording even seems better.....once again Membran give you half a chance to draw breath between pieces but thats less of a problem than on other discs....No mention of the piano but overall a medium recommendation..Though some purist may pick up on the occasional unsure moments.Dave
