Performance:   Sonics:
Eugen Jochum was clearly one of the great Brucknerians and his authority is not in doubt, but he is let down here by rather poor acoustics (the recording was made in a church). In the redbook version the sound was constrained and harsh, i.e. hardly acceptable. Now there is a greater sense of space (so vital in this mighty symphony), but the trumpets are occasionally rather shrill and the strings are not as mellow as one would like them to be. In terms of sound this recording is surely no match for Harnoncourt on BMG. But interpretatively, Jochum is in a different class. His sure grasp of the musical architecture and his ability to project a sense of drama and inevitability are sadly lacking in Harnoncourt's stop-go approach to the music.

The Jochum recording of Bruckner's 5th is, in my view, the greatest interpretation of have ever heard. I look forward to listening to the SACD, which, at this point, is prohibitively priced.
