Performance:  Sonics:
An excellent and generous collection of Wagner overtures and preludes. This seems to be the first SACD to include the overture to "Rienzi". Kreizberg prefers broad tempi and massive climaxes, which pose no problem in a multi-channel recording. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is not quite in the top league, but it plays with verve and total commitment. Sonically, the Pentatone recording can hardly be faulted although there are some passages in which the strings sound rather harsh. This explains why I have not given it top marks.
