Performance: Sonics: |
| Sonically, I am not particularly impressed by this recording. The tenor's upper register comes across as hard and metallic, almost unpleasant in the louder passages. First I thought there was something wrong with my equipment or my ears, but when I put on an earlier SACD ("Una furtiva lagrima"), the voice was much smoother and more natural. The singing is of the first order, there seem to be virtually no technical problems for this exceptional tenor. But I found much of the selected material rather boring. The disc contains a number of alternative arias written for specific singers, which strike me as dull and uninspired. I would describe the arias from "Il matrimonio segreto" (Cimarosa), "Rigoletto" (Verdi) and "Gianni Schicchi" (Puccini) as the highlights of this disc.
