Performance:  Sonics:
I've just been sampling some jazz SACDs after listening exclusively to classical over recent years, and while I have enjoyed Miles Davis the most, and appreciated Bill Evans, this disc just did not interest me. I found it slightly repetitive, and rather unremarkable in terms of piano playing - Monk must have done more than this to gain his reputation, surely? Miles Davis seems more inventive and with greater vision.

Sonically this stereo hybrid is OK for its age, a little harsh on some of the brass. But it doesn't have the atmosphere of the Davis albums I've heard (only two admittedly, and one of those was in multichannel). This does recreate the feeling of a live jam session fairly well, but sounds a little rough and ready.

If you like this kind of music, I wouldn't criticise as I'm speaking from a less knowledgeable position - but if you're a newcomer to jazz I'd start elsewhere, or at least sample before buying.

As stated by the previous reviewer - this piece is just beautiful and will capture you if you are a lover of brass. The description leaves out the fact that Coltrane is playing along side Hawkins, and it is quite a treat. So, you've got two tenor saxes and Gigi Gryce on alto sax. Listed as modern jazz, it was recorded almost 50 years ago. All the songs are compositions or arranged by Monk and have the group in mind for the session. If you don't mind two takes of two of the songs, you should love "Monks Music". It sounds like it was recorded much more recently, but the soundstage is not as open as more recent recordings. You need not be a Monk fan to appreciate this recording.
