| If "modern" and "20th Century" make you clutch your purse in fear, then "degenerate" probably won't reassure you. But as Dan Davis says in his editorial, these are NEOCLASSICAL works. I confess I hesitated to mix this disc in with my classical & romantic SACDs, but curiosity got the better of me. This isn't fingernails-on-chalkboard; it isn't even depressing (a miraculous result considering the death-camp origins). I feel quite, quite happy listening to this music, again and again -- and I feel ashamed that I lingered briefly on Goebbels' side of the Entartete-Musik controversy. The Prazáks play exquisitely (cf their beautiful Schubert Quintet/Quartet 7). The acoustics are intimate and clear: lots of pizzicato with audible fingertips, bass enjoys equality with the higher registers -- LOTS OF SPACE surrounding.
