I have to agree with DeSelby's description of the sound. On this recording, the top treble spectrum (brilliance) is missing from all the instruments. The sound is veiled and boxy. It's definitely a problem and not just a question of taste. I haven't heard any other Telarc jazz SACD sounding like this.

The CD layer sounds similar. I have not heard the multichannel layer.

Musicwise, it's an varied mainstream quintet session, enjoyable, top level playing. One of the best recent Tyner albums.

I don't know what the previous reviewer was listening to, but this is another great Telarc album. It won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group. Although not groundbreaking, this is another fine album with excellent resolution and distinct placement of the individual instruments within the soundstage.

“Several factors enable pianist McCoy Tyner to continue his recent string of quality recordings. First, there's the Philly-born leader's unique vibe, formed in the crucible of the classic John Coltrane quartet. Then there's the exuberance of this quintet, which accomplishes more than merely backing up the leader…The vivid supporting cast includes South Jersey-based saxophonist Gary Bartz, a former sideman of Miles, Mingus and Blakey. Another Philly native, the great bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash repeatedly take this congregation where it needs to go.” ***1/2 -- Philadelphia Inquirer
