I've listened to this version of Scary Monsters for a whole month now, and while it is a noticeable improvement over my U.S. Rykodisk redbook CD, I would still recommend that Bowie fans should wait for the definitive version with a Tony Visconti 5.1 surround remix.

On the website, Visconti says he would love to remix "Low", "Heroes", "Lodger" and "Scary Monsters" for 5.1 because that would allow him to reveal the room dynamics of the recordings in their full glory. Visconti habitually shies away from exclusively close-miking vox & instruments, instead perferring room ambience to color sounds.

This album is so packed with sonic details--it's really a shame that only "Ziggy Stardust" got the surround treatment. So 4 stars it is on recording quality. Performance-wise, this is a 5-star and always has been--Bowie's last such indisputable result, although arguably, "Heathen" does come close in spots.

And no, methinks surround sound is not only for listeners who are doped up and too lazy to don headphones ;-) But... if you wanna believe that anyway, then you will be happy enough with the 2.0 stereo mix.

One last point--for us in Europe, this hybrid is hideously overpriced--c'mon, EMI, quit gypping us by charging 23 Euro for the same product that goes for $15 on sale in the States! 'Coz if you do continue this bulls**t, we'll just mail order our SACDs from countries where you DON'T gouge your customers! Viva la Internet!

Unfortunately all I offer as a comparison is a very weak one (Cassette to SACD)....

I bet that is a first on this website !

I have always loved this album but just never got around to buying it on CD or vinyl. As a young man i bought this on cassette and played the heck out of it. Then grew out of the Bowie albums and put them aside for a long time. Then back in the 90's got back into the Bowie phase and began replacing the vinyl and yes one cassette...

Now to the SACD is excellent...the sound is rich and the instruments well defined. Particularly the vocals of Bowie and the guitar work (Robert Fripp of King Crimson) come out well defined across my stereo. I am sure all fans of Bowie will know this album and if not then most certainly will know "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion" both come from this album.

a huge improvement over my cassette (lol) and a noticeable improvement over the remastered CD version for my ears.
