Quintessential, timeless jazz. These tunes and the interpetations can hardly be improved. Zoot swings like there's no tomorrow, and the rest of the band swings right along with him. Everyone I know who has ever heard this music, jazz fan or not, loves it immediately. This is the purest distillation of an American musical idiom, in content, form, and style. Worthy of far more than five stars.

Don't be put off by less than perfect sound. This is not a disc to play for your audiophile friends; it's a disc to play for anyone who is still breathing. There is so much boring and worthless tripe that is drooled over by those who worship the quality of sound above all else. Here is a disc, the content of which is beyond reproach, a true classic, and it's your loss if you don't give it a chance just because it was not recorded with the best equipment. The sound is not so bad (better than the CD, at least), and will become a secondary concern, or of no concern at all, once you hear the music.

Zoot is in good company here with Joe Pass (g) and Oscar Peterson (p) providing stellar backup to his eloquently laid-back style of playing. The album features 11 of the Gershwin Brothers' most famous tunes, all played fairly straight-forwardly. Enthusiastically recommended for the music.

The recording quality is a bit disappointing, though, inasmuch as it is relatively modern (recorded in 1976). Peterson's piano appears in both channels for nearly all of the tracks, while Sims and his two timekeepers (Mraz on bass and Tate on drums) seem to be locked together in an almost mono-like sound stage on all but a few tracks. The drums and bass are also recorded at a very low volume level compared to the sax and piano, while Pass' guitar seems equally reticent. There's very little dynamic range and no lower frequencies to speak of either, so I'd recommend you try some of Zoot's other recordings for Pablo (Basie and Zoot's a winner) if you are not familiar with the artist, and good dynamic sound is among your highest priorities.
