Performance:  Sonics:
I found this to be a well-recorded and good performance. The surround mix is a bit unusual in that the rear channels, which are used for room ambience, are not very loud at all, but for all that, the sound is very full, and even keeps my subwoofer busy.

On contrast to the previous reviewer of this SA-CD, I didn't find the recording suffered from too much close-mic'ing the instruments--I think the fact that it was recorded in a church converted into a recording studio is the deciding factor, simply because there's much less room to work with that in a full-size concert hall, where the mics are set up further away and there is typically much more area and a much longer & fuller reverb sound ambience.

Now, if they had recorded in the Cologne cathedral, then of course that would be different--that is as big as any concert hall I've ever seen. But I digress...

Four stars both for sound & performance. I too found "Ein musikalische Spaß" tedious, but that's because the deliberate mistakes really grate on me--I would've advised the label to simply issue the disk without it in the first place.

Review about Stereo performance only:
I bought this disc mainly for K. 522 A Musical Joke, and this disc disappoints me. It seems that the microphones are too close to the music. On K. 525 this is obvious too, but not so disturbing. K. 525 is played better too than K. 522, K.522 is played too seriously and slow for a joke. I mainly compared this disc with the performances of Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Mozart Ensemble in 1968 and 1970, I have these pieces on Decca CD and Super Analogue 180 gr LP.
