This is a very interesting and diverse sacd covering a large area of USA music writing last centre of the century...Starting with quality, I doubt if this is a DSD recording especially the Virgil Thomson "Filling Station" probably not a popular subject at the moment!.,,, The opening Festival Overture by Nikolaia Lopatnikoff of Estonianan origin is excellent .....slightly more depth and rewarding than a normal overture and quality wise this and the equally interesting Robert Helps concerto 2 for piano has some really nice music reminiscent of Martinu Debussy and Ravel(Helps). The piano tone is very nice right to the last soft note and will reward you with repeat playing.. .The Thomson piece which I bought the disc for seems the weakest in quality on all levels..Though some of the tunes are easy on the ear...ie you have heard them before and some will bring a smile to your face.. The ballet adds a nice balance to the Robert Kukka Symphony 2..again someone I had not heard before,This music has plenty of substance and interest. It is not avante garde or just sound for its own sake,, a quality pointed out on some later USA Composers...The sonics on the last work are back to the Albany slightly hard PCM? level but still an improvement on rbcd.......A worthwhile purchase just for its rarity but not one to use as a demonstaration disc..again more like this rather than another version of Dvorak/Vivaldi or even Wagner operas for that matter ...Dave
