Sam Cooke at the Copa was the disc that convinced me to stop buying conventional CDs. It is inconceivable how a forty year old live recording could sound this good. If you go to the Sam Cooke website (samcooke.com) there are a few reviews and press releases that help to explain it. Restoration producer Jody Klein explained: "We did absolutely everything conceivable to replicate the actual sonic ambience of the Copa and Sam Cooke's performance there." Further in the release it says: In the 5.1 version, the mumuring of the audience, the sound of silverware on china, of ice cubes in highball glasses, is subtly discernable. Sound engineers looked at floor plans of the club and watched the scene from the film Goodfellas that was shot in the Copa just before it closed in order to gauge the space and its acoustic characteristics so as to make the new mix "true" to the room. In this reviewer's opinion, ABKCO should get an award for their work with this disc. This is clearly what is meant by the phrase "above and beyond the call of duty." I only wish other companies took their work as seriously.

Confirmation of the technical artistry involved comes further in the release: Upon hearing a playback at a private listening of the 5.1 surround sound program of his late brother's Copa performance, L.C. Cooke exclaimed with tears in his eyes, "It's like he's here with us again!" It truly does seem like he's right in your room as you play this disc. I still haven't made the multi-channel move so I've only listened to the stereo track. It would be hard to pick out a favorite track, but the medley of Try A Little Tenderness, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons, and You Send Me is a tough one to beat and makes a good demo track for potential convertees. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a better disc to give as a gift. Maybe giving out a few of these as gifts will help to swell the ranks. After hearing this, I went out and immediately bought all the other Sam Cooke SACDs.

He's a quick review for all you groovy cats out there.

The best vocal recording ever! Yes ever. The album is fun to listen to as he's obvioulsy having a great time playing at the Copa. The band smokes, too, but Sam is the star. He's an incredible entertainer, and it's fun to hear him interact with the audiance. And the vocals... let's just say this is as close as you can get to "he's in you're living room" sound. The best ever. Even better sounding than Willie Nelson's "Stardust." Who can resist singing along with "If I had a hammer?" Not me! My toes are tapping, and I am ringing out justice all over this land baby :) And you will too after you buy this album. Highly recommended.

Just a note to let everyone know that the SA-CD link to Amazon.com (US) takes you to the regular CD listing, not the SACD. Apparently, they don't have a separate page for the SACD version, although a couple of used SACDs are listed under the "Collectible" section as of June 2015.
