This is another to "Take a chance on" and really enjoy.Previous works of this composer have always seemed poorly recorded but these three works from circa 1940s America are excellent and my usual concern re this smallish thin on strings orchestra are not in evidence here. The opening work was a suprise.A fanfare brass orientated and excellently played and recorded followed my a string dominated chorale and a presto Finale that rounds off what could be considered the opening work of a concert type sacd. Plenty of rhythm and superbly captured drums for early satisfaction.?.
The following Piano concerto new to me starts with an American jazz style and evolves with a Ravel and Prokofiev 3 type concerto which one is reminded of.This is no criticism as its just a descriptive comparisson.Fellow scouser John McCabe who has never been one of my favourite in composition or performing is excellent here.
The Symphony is a total different world to start off with.Almost an odd english soundworld to it which changes almost without notice melodically to a more American work.Occasionally you are reminded of other stateside composers and one particular theme seems an obvious case of tune borrowing but Im not sure who pinched it from whom.Guess what some excellent recorded timapani to finish. . This is no ordinary note spinning and sound effects but a well worked rewarding symphony .I played this after a highly reviewed Linn disc and this is overall a better fuller sound and certainly the best Albany disc to date.Looking forward to the next interesting release from them with pleasure. D.
