Performance: Sonics: |
As I thought about the review for this album an analogy came to mind with a Murray Parahia piano recital that I recently attended with 2 other people. Our reactions could not have been more different. My response to it was that I was impressed to see a professional at work, obviously at the top of his game. I would say this was a somewhat clinical observation. I enjoyed it for that reason and because of the fact that one does not often get the chance to see MP play. The other person in our party however was literally moved to tears at some points during the performance. An emotional connection to what was going on that obviously eluded me entirely :-) The third person was bored stiff by the entire performance !
I think that this album can evoke similar responses. Personally I like it, but even after repeated listening I still find it somewhat of a task to listen to all of it in one sitting. But I am sure this album will grow on me, simply because of the immense artistic honesty and sheer skill represented by Corea and Hancock. There is a lot here to discover. There are not that many folks who could pull off such an an improvisational 'tour de force'. But if you are not that knowledgeable about music, player interactions, or the piano as an instrument I can imagine that you would have a hard time 'getting' this album. It can be viewed by some as art for art's sake. You have to dig solo piano to appreciate it.
Overall this album gets a thumbs up, but also a three star rating and no more at this point. As I implied in the introductory paragraph I can imagine that other folks would give this performance a 5 star rating or 2 rating as well. There is no acounting for taste. Perhaps over time I will revisit this review and validate my responses to this music.
