Performance:   Sonics:
John Lennon: Walls and Bridges SHM SACD Stereo Only. Japanese release 12-03-2014.

As I am reviewing titles from a big CDJapan order I am happy to say after being unhappy with the two last discs I am now happy again. I have never owned this disc but the stereo sound is great and songs fun and catchy.

Performance: This, the 5th studio album released in 1974 is very good. Recorded during his lost weekend period away from Yoko Ono. Features the tune, "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" his first number one hit and only chart topper as a solo artist, which I find hard to believe. Songs like the latter can be fun and rocking with other nice mellow songs such as "Bless You". Great musicianship through out. John's vocals really shine. Overdub engineer was Jimmy Iovine if you have ever seen him on American Idol.

Stereo Sonics: Tiny tape hiss beginning of Track 6, with recording of a howling wolf. Beautiful sound stage, excellent stereo separation with well balanced mix, using a mixture of strings, pianos, guitars, drums, horns, all coming through to the listener in a subtle heavenly brilliance. Has many if not all analogue, warm moments. Including the space alien feedback on Track 10, Beef Jerky.

Packaging: Cardboard mini LP original is a real fun reproduction. Has split front cover that you can fold back (I didn't) and play with different looks of John's photo. Green disc with plastic sleeve that fits in a paper sleeve with more photos of John. Mini original paper booklet with pictures of John's childhood artwork, photos, lyrics, and credits. Print unfortunately is too small for my eyes and I had to use my magnifier reader. Mini paper booklet in Japanese with English lyrics.

Whew, as I was writing reviews I was really getting in a funk and this disc just pulled me right back up. So glad I have it. Could be my favorite of the 7 Japanese SHM SACD releases.

John Lennon's solo lyrics are so brutal as to his feelings from being a Beatle and his mad love for Yoko. His death was such a waste.
