In his review Geohominid claims that Karajan does not use the trumpet option in the finale of the Honegger 2. Wrong. It is there, barely audible but it is there. Played by Fritz Wesenigk.

Thanks - I suspected it might be there, but after several hearings, I wasn't quite convinced. There is no indication in the score for the trumpet to play quieter than the strings. I've updated the review.

While it is perfectly possible to enjoy Strauss's 'Also sprach Zarathustra' without bothering about its decoding and meaning, knowledge of what motivated Strauss and how he responded does add an extra dimension to enjoying the music.

There is an excellent radio talk by Steven Johnson in his BBC programme "Discovering Music" - around 22 mins. It has music examples and is both lucid and perceptive, an invaluable aid.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b015ypbc/Discovering_Music_Strauss_Also_sprach_Zarathustra/

I've not been able to find out if the BBC iPlayer will work for those accessing from outside the UK; this is generally true for Videos but may not hold for radio programmes (mp3 format).

Enjoy,
John

It does not because of licensing issues. I've tried to link people her with BBC Proms concerts in the past without success. My son in Amsterdam cannot access it and he is only a couple of hundred miles from London across the North Sea

I have been hoping for a new recording of Also Sprach for some time. Does anyone know if there is anything in the pipelene? A blu-ray of the DG Dudamel may suffice but would probably not be mch anyway (There is a 24/96 download available). Meantime does anyone know this recording - quite interesting program but is the Strauss any good?

There is a blu Ray video of the RCO coming out soon. This disc is not worth purchasing IMO

Wow. Not one single mention of sound quality in the review or comments. On a site geared toward SACD fans (audiophiles) I would have appreciated a mention of the SQ!

Anyway, sadly my search for a decent hi-res master of this piece goes on. My current go-to disc is the redbook 1968 Zubin Mehta performance (FIM label). Just wish I could find an SACD of this piece that sounded half as good...

Well, the review does close with a statement that the disc is "superbly well recorded" and gets 4.5 stars for sq, so I think it's safe to say that Mr. Miller thinks it's fine in that respect.

And the review goes on to say...

"The programme works well, both of the major works are of a high standard and the recording, from the Lübeck Congress and Music Hall with its renowned acoustics, is exemplary. The dynamic range is large, the great climaxes in Strauss surge radiantly around the hall without distortion. A good front-back perspective and pinpoint location of instrumental groups is a further asset."

I'd say this is more than one single word. ;-)

I have bought a few discs in this series, there was also one with a Scriabin symphony, because of the repertoire, and have been disappointed by all of them. The recording quality is poor, with a murky acoustic covering up orchestral detail. I certainly don't hear the dynamic range John refers to.

By the way, there is a Pentatone of the Scriabin coming out shortly. So I hope that will be the go to SACD for that piece.
