Thank you, Dan Popp. I have been reading these reviews waiting for someone to make a statement about the scherzo. You did and I appreciate it because it tells me not to buy this one. I am an old brass player and if the recording company can't get the brass right, i don't want it. Thank you

I have both the Harnoncourt/VPO and the newer Jarvi/Frankfurt recordings of this, one of my most beloved symphonies. I must say that while the recored quality of the Jarvi is somewhat better in some ways - quite good really - I think I prefer the old Harnoncourt from the standpoint of interpretation, and I personally find the sonics different, but only slightly inferior. Having heard live concerts in the hall in Salzburg, where the Harnoncourt was recorded, I can relate to the sound as reproduced rather well, in Mch of course. Personally, I think the sound of those Wagner tubas, which I love to death, comes across somewhat better on the Harnoncourt. But, each is a very fine recording in its special way.
