Many thanks to Geohominid for his fine review of this SACD. I am an admirer of Pettersson's music and have managed to collect all of the symphonies save No.12 on the BIS and CPO labels (all on RBCD). In general, I find the BIS performances to be superior to those on CPO where I have duplicates (syms 2, 3 and 8) despite the variety of conductors employed on BIS. I look forward to acquiring this 6th. It makes me wonder what BIS's plans are for this composer - will Lindberg re-record some of the syms already on BIS RBCD? The complexity of Pettersson's music greatly benefits from the resolution and clarity of SACD.

Sounds good, but why no stars? Reading between the lines, I assume it would get a 5/5 for both sound and performance.

It appears that Geohominid has abandoned star ratings probably as a result of the huge kerfuffle expressed over in the recent star rating thread. I'm perfectly fine with it. The words are way more important than the stars to me.

I agree with Krisjan, the review is the important thing.

Dear all,

I can see that 1 of 4 recommends this SACD. A while ago it was 0 of 3.

I am extremely surprised and, while I certainly don't want to argue the issue of the right to judge negatively one of the best and most important SACD:s we have issued in recent times, I would be REALLY interested to know what in the production made the first 3 listeners do the thumb-down. Resolution (24/96), sound quality, interpretation, cover, the music itself? As I said, I am not about to argue possible forthcoming (negative) points, I am just so incredibly surprised. I mean, here I read in the Channel thread the pleas for repertoire outside the standard fare, and when we comply with an essential work by one of the 20th C's most important and personal composers, we get 0 of 3???

I was thinking the same thing and have recommended the recording both here and on Facebook. This symphony is one of the most gripping experiences I have had for many years. A great disc.

Perhaps it just the (bad) luck of the draw that 3 Pettersson haters responded first! I have my copy on order and am personally thrilled to see his music on SACD.

Yes, I considered that. But, if they are Pettersson haters, why would they buy in the first place? So, logic demands that, if they bought the SACD, they are basically interested, but became disappointed somehow. It is that somehow I'd be really curious to know what it is, since I consider this to be one of the most essential SACD:s we have produced, period, and one of the best interpreted and played, and in hi-res at that. Again, I am not out to argue, nor am I supercilious about it, nor do I in any way, shape or form deny or question their rights to think whatever they like. I just plainly don't understand. And I am curious.

How do you know that all three actually bought and listened to this SACD? It has come out just recently in Germany and France and has not even been released in the U.K., the U.S., or Canada. I am still waiting to lay my hands on it - and will have to wait for quite some time before I can.

This "evaluation" may come from three people who dislike BIS on principle, value only DSD recordings, or are unsympathetic towards anything written later than, let us say, Debussy and Ravel. Who knows? Frankly, if I were you I would not care too much, as this "recommendation" feature is unpredictable in the extreme and not very representative.

I agree with the other posters: a most desirable recording, unbeatable as far as repertoire is concerned. Let others discuss ad nauseam the relative merit of new Mahler 1's.

The "recommend" button is quite pointless.
