I used single-layer SACDs for my tests, to make sure it was reading the SACD layer. I get nothing. No sound when playing SACDs ... works with CDs.

You are getting these results because your TV negotitaes with the player over HDMI to establish what it can and cannot play. Your average and not so average TV understands 48/24 PCM in stereo and lesser. Since the Sony players can do either DSD or 176/24 PCM with SACD you luck out with the TV and get nothing. Either unplug the TV and use the analog connects to your amplifier or if you are forced to use the TV and its amplifier send the SACD as analog to the analog inputs of the TV. A typical DVD or Bluray is already or can be downsampled to 48/24 and the TV doesnt baulk at the audio data.
