Art song isn't "my thing", but this is almost 80 minutes of sheer beauty. I was drawn to the disc through a longtime love of the music of George Butterworth, kia at the Somme in 1916, and perhaps best remembered for his "Shropshire Lad" songs which form a part of this disc. I was less familiar with the story of Ivor Gurney, and had never heard a note of his music. Vaughn Williams, of course, is another matter entirely, though my affection for his music had never gotten me around to these songs. In any event, these are wonderful performances from James Rutherford with marvelous support from Eugene Asti all in aid of music and text that simply touches my heart.
