From what I can tell from monitoring this site's reviews and discussions, DSD recordings are generally preferable to PCM ones, whether an original recording or one from the analog tapes. However, my amplifier does not allow me to playback a pure DSD signal, and do not see myself upgrading for quite some time. In light of this, is there any reason for me to consider the merit of an SACD recorded in DSD over one recorded in PCM (all else being equal), since it will be converted to PCM anyway?

Of course not, because all things are never actually equal.

If the performance is terrible DSD will not improve the quality of the playing or the interpretation.
If the microphones are poorly positioned DSD can do nothing about that.

etc.

Without going deep into the reasons why, I do prefer DSD over PCM recordings.
When I am listening to the music with PCM recording, something is missing from the music, and it sound more artificial and electronic. DSD recording is more pleasant to my ears.

Does your setup allow for "pure DSD" playback?

(Recording>SACD>Playback)

I doubt there is much sonic difference between PCM>DSD>PCM vs DSD>DSD>PCM since you are converting everything to PCM hopefully at 176.4kHz. I prefer DSD>DSD>DSD, does your player keep the signal DSD using the analog outs?

Highly unlikely as DSD is a digital signal, analogue ones are clearly not...

My Sony BDP-S590 does not have MCH analog outputs, but it does send DSD or 176kHz PCM over HDMI. My Denon AVR2112CI however does not even accept DSD (most AVRs that do seem to convert to PCM anyway, and the ones that do preserve DSD place limitations on any sound adjustments).

Doesn't DSD have to be converted to analog at some point in playback system anyway? If so, then a player's DAC converting DSD straight to analog, which is transferred to an amp and then to the speakers without being converted back into a digital signal, would be as ideal as sending DSD over HDMI to an amp and then converting straight to analog with the amp's DAC, correct?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, some SACD players convert DSD>PCM>analog using the analog outs, and other players keep the signal DSD until converted to analog using the analog outs.

Thanks, m8.

Your post is the first confirmation of 176.4 kHz PCM sample rate I've seen for Sx90 models.
