If I build a surround processor pre amp that supports DSD over HDMI would I have to licence this from Sony?

Only if you're planning to sell it -- not if you build it for your own private use, I guess.

The title of this press release suggests DSD is actually licensed though the body of it doesn't mention it further.

The Ds Bs? It would be the bee's knees for sure...

As an aside I frankly find it very frustrating that there are no surround amps (or superior DACS) that support DSD over HDMI. Wouldn't it be the Ds Bs if you could stream DSD?

There are some AVR's and prepros that do. Both the better Denon and Onkyo/Integra AVRs and prepros will accept DSD over HDMI. Not much else at any price does that I am aware of. For Pioneer, Yamaha and NAD, I am not sure. It is interesting that the higher end and more costly the prepro, handling of DSD input completely disappears. Apparently, the high end companies in the Mch world do not subscribe to the view that DSD must be untouched except for conversion to analog. And some, like Krell and Levinson also make SACD players.

I have the Integra DHC 80.2 prepro, and in my experience, any very slight sonic advantage to pure DSD is easily more than outweighed by the features available in PCM mode, namely, speaker distance compensation, bass management and room EQ. In fact, without most of these features, a Mch setup would be prohibitive for me from a space and cost perspective. I do, however, believe the sound is better when the Integra does the DSD to PCM conversion, rather than my Oppo player.
That is my preferred way of using HDMI with SACD.

It may be a matter of economics in that, as I understand it, there is an up-front cost as well as a per-item cost for SACD/DSD. The relatively low volume of high end processors mitigates against amortizing the former.

Why they can do it for SACD players may not be relevant since, if they want to have an SACD player, they must swallow (and pass on) the cost. With processors, they can find excuses, as you do (and me, too).

I'm in full agreement with Fitz and would add Marantz to the list. Just helped a friend who is into SACD stereo looking to up grade his old AVR and the new 6007 fitted the bill. It has DSD decoding which is what you want for stereo but not for MC.

Thanks. Good to know. Apparently some or all of the xx07 series of receivers have a DSD decoder, a first for Marantz. But, there is as yet no prepro in their lineup that does. Apparently, also, they are quite similar to, though pricier than their sister system company Denon's AVR lineup, though none of the Marantz's have Audyssey XT/32 like the best Denons.

............

To be specific of Denon AVR, only the AVR-431x models and above have DSD over HDMI capability. They aren't cheap.

Just my 2p. : )

The manuals for 2313 & 3313 both claim to handle DSD:
http://www.denon.co.uk/DocumentMaster/UK/AVR-3313E2_ENG_CD-ROM_v00.pdf (p38)
http://www.denon.co.uk/DocumentMaster/UK/AVR-2313E2_ENG_CD-ROM_v00.pdf (p34)

Interesting!

You maybe on to something:
http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/Product/Pages/Product-Detail.aspx?CatId=HomeTheatre&SubId=AVReceivers&ProductId=AVR3313

In detailed specifications, look under Connections. Funnily, nothing is mentioned of HDMI for SACD connection. Could be analogue inputs......in 2013??

I think it's more that the version of HDMI it supports can accept DSD or that the DenonLink does or both.

Do you agree/disagree that D class amplifier should be a future for SACD so DSD recorded music can be transfer to let say 192/24 signal and digitally amplified?
