Could the SACD reissue market be an unexpected beneficiary of this trend?

The comfort zone of nostaglia rings true here and the simple fact that they don't make them now like they used to is in full force.

I'm sure SACD reissues have a lot to do with it coupled with the low prices of older acts performing on BD concert discs.

I wouldn't be surprised if for SACD this has been the case already much longer than for the overall music market.

As the article makes clear, this trend is driven by pricing:

"David Bakula, a Nielsen analyst, told OC Weekly that “the primary catalyst for the trend is cost.” In general, new records cost more than older records. Catalog records are usually priced between $6 and $11, while new records start at about $13 for a physical release."

So I don't see how format has anything to do with this.

so people are listening to older music because its cheaper, not because its better? THat seems like a wierd interpretation of the economics. Music either moves you or it doesnt. I dont know anyone that likes a piece of music solely because they can afford it.

Expensive SACD reissues are a phenomenon outside normal economics. Lesser quality (much less than CD) sold at 3-5 times the "normal price" to SACD addicts when there is not enough new SACD worthy material available.

I just subscribed to Rdio. Listening to SACD will be event music, like watching a Blu Ray movie on.a weekend.

Shame on you, pop music industry, for lowering the quality of your product when extraordinary technology exists to reproducte true high quality music. Not just talking about SACD.
