Would old analog recordings from 60's until 80's sound better on SACD than CD? Or would the sound quality be subtle? I ask this because some remasters from singers/bands from this age on CD doesn't really sound good.

Yes! I've got Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed 2002 SACDs and they sound a lot better than the two previous CD versions I owned. They also sounded a lot better than the 2003 vinyl editions.

Fair question and of course the answer lies in the quality of the original analogue source. If it is poor with restricted frequency and dynamic range and poor spatial definition then the benefits of DSD re-mastering may not be realised.

There are plenty of examples of DSD re-mastered recordings sounding infinitely better than red book re-mastering

Thanks for the reply windhoek. It's just what I need to encourage me to know this technology.

Thanks hiredfox. I asked this question because comparing some songs I own on CD don't sound much better than the same songs on 45 RPM vinyl disc.

I found an interesting article about SACD in my country. This is the web site: http://planetech.uol.com.br/2010/04/20/sacd-e-dvd-audio-voce-ainda-se-lembra-2/

I'm gonna translate it:

SACD and DVD-Audio: Do you still remember them?
By Alex dos Santos

When doing a text on the sophisticated Marantz Blu-ray players that are coming to market, I saw that they reproduce SACD and DVD-Audio and remembered the great recordings I used to listen to in these high-resolution multichannel formats.

It seems like yesterday that the market for A/V watched the war between SACD and DVD-A and discussed their superiority to the CD and vinyl. Companies such as Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Denon, Onkyo and Marantz came here to launch compatible players (including the universal type) at almost prohibitive prices. Ok, but where are these devices?

A stupid war between SACD and DVD-A, of course, was the main reason why the record labels are afraid to back the investment in technology, since producing a disc with multichannel sampling and higher resolution than the CD is nothing cheap.

Furthermore, both the DVD-A and SACD formats have been born to be niche formats. After all, to enjoy all this definition sound on these discs, you had to have a high standard audio system - which, face it, is for to few mortals.

The biggest complaint about Meyer & Moran test was that most recordings they used were old reissues, which naturally were not better than CDs, nobody out of 150 listeners could hear a difference.

Depends on the quality of the original engineering and remastering. Analogue recordings can sound superb and they can sound extremely poor. The best sounding analogue recordings I've found so far on SACD are from Reference Recordings, Tacet, Analogue Productions, AudioQuest, Opus 3, MFSL and Universal SHM-SACDs.

You also mentioned 45RPM, do you mean the audiophile 180/200gram 45RPM LPs or commercial 45RPM singles?

Every SACD I've heard sounded better than its CD version, however many audiophile LPs in my system sound better than the SACD versions.
