People born after the introduction of CD's are downloading. That's the future.

I think downloads are already on the way down, if you will excuse the pun.

People born after 1990 are streaming. It's even cheaper, the quality is even worse, and it's even more convenient. I suspect downloads will survive predominantly as a 'free' format.

What Jared is offering albeit at quite a price,is the opportunity to hear his DSD recordings the same way he can, even in mch.
As Native Masterfiles.

Isn't that what we all do already, every time we buy one of his SACDs?

I don't think anyone ever claimed that the internal DAC on the Mac was that great -- that's one of the reasons they provide you with an optical out.

The only one I know of, who has claimed so is Teresa. But to answer the question of what DAC I currently use.I use a Hegel HD20 which to my ears beat a Weiss DAC that cost four times more in a close comparison.
Not because I pay too much attention to what reviewers say, but especially in Germany where at least some also use real acoustic music for their sonic evaluations, there are some reviews online that seem to concur with my impressions.
Teresa on the other hand obviously preferred the internal dac of her mac compared to a imho much better dac.
Beauty is in the "Ear" of the beholder".
Perceived SQ I suppose is a matter of both different references and preferences.

Colin, you paint with a very wide brush. I suspect you are correct for mass media distribution. But niche markets, particularly those like the quality driven high end audio do not obey mass behaviors. Very stable businesses built on satisfying the unique wants of a sub market prosper all the time, counter to the mass market.

Also, do you control volume from your computer via software?

In some performance areas I thought the Bryston BDA-1 DAC bettered the internal DAC, but not all. I used the optical outs to the DAC and after much study I believe optical has too much jitter, if I try another DAC it will be Firewire or USB connected instead.

If using the internal DAC on a MAC, use an excellent stereo mini to 2 RCA interconnect cable to connect to your preamp, I chose Monster however there are other brands available. Also and this is EXTREMELY important, volume in Core Audio, System Preferences and in iTunes MUST be set at maximum level (100%) and never lowered as it will drastically reduce resolution, this is because one loses resolution when decreasing volume in the digital domain, Instead control the volume with your preamp.

However all things considered SACDs and DVD-Audios on my modified player sound better.

I want to be able to buy and sell used recordings.

This is why I will never purchase a download ever again! If at a later date I don't want the recording anymore, with an SACD or DVD-Audio I resale it, sometimes at a profit. However with a download all I can do is delete it at a 100% loss. No more, NO PAID DOWNLOADS for me. I will download free high-resolution music as I am only spending my time, no loss if I delete later.

Aha, so now we know the real reason why you want the software to stay...in order to resell it. I have to tell you Teresa, Rammie ain't going to like this. He'll say you're trying to hoard those discs.

That may be the case now, but it's by no means an absolute. If libraries can lend people e-books and audio books via download over the internet, I'm sure there is a way allow consumers to resell downloaded recordings. It's just a matter of labels/download stores allowing it.

I suspect the reason your long~suffering spouse contracted psoriasis was not due to her employment at Amazon but rather being wed to a gonad~busting "groaner" like yourself!
