I know, it really bugs me to see all those silly Americans picketing MTT's every performance here in Philadelphia carrying signs saying BUT HE CAN'T DO BEETHOVEN.

As to the disc, yes, it's excellent in all respects except the stingy timing. The MTT/SFSO 5th is also very fine and is coupled much more generously with a lovely performance of the 4th concerto with Emmanuel Ax Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, Piano Concerto No. 4 - Michael Tilson Thomas.

Ha! ha!

I have the 5th as well. SFSO and MTT seemingly can do nothing wrong right now. One hell of a 'purple patch'!

A rip-roaring edge of the seat performance from MTT to really annoy those - mostly Americans - who suggest that he "can't do" Beethoven.

I, personally am not saying MTT "can't do" Beethoven; it's just infuriating that he "could do" just about...**anything** else. Please God, anything else. Just off the top of my head: Barber, Copland, Harris; Janacek, Martinu, Britten, Vaughan Williams....

SOOOOO tired of Beethoven. (Unless Scherchen's doing it.)

However, very sincerely happy to witness your enthusiasm. It must be *very* good.

Why this program on disk? Got me!

Agreed. It's a bit ridiculous to go from a Mahler cycle to a Beethoven cycle. At the least, why not pair a Beethoven symphony with something from the 20th or 21st Centuries?

Even though I like this disc I agree that we need more Mahler and Beethoven symphonies like a hole in the head. I buy these things to support the SFSO's recording project, just as I do the BSO's, and CSO's, because if they stop doing it themselves no "label" is going to fill the gap with new sacd recordings of the best American orchestras. Despite my general aversion to Christoph Eschenbach's rather willful/odd tempos I bought the Ondine/Philly Orchestra recordings for the same reason.

Fair's fair.. he has done some Barber and Adams in between don't forget and also superbly well.

... just so long as he doesn't start trekking around the Finnish forests trying to discover yet another unknown Finnish genius!

I love Finland by the way, honest.

As an aside, has anybody ever actually seen water flowing at Yosemite falls? Every time we've been there it's been as dry as a bone even 'though on our last trip a local prof on vacation (from the City) assured us it does.

We'll be over there again in the fall... hope to take in a concert or two at Davies as well hopefully including the Mahler 5 but booking hasn't started yet.

A lone voice of reason, although probably not loud enough to be heard in those noisy "Finnish forests..."

I don´t think this is going to be a complete Beethoven cycle. Also, don´t forget the excellent Ives/Copland SACD.

Isn't Bissie from Sweden? Love masterworks for solo clarinet by unknown composers but....

: )
