We have an old saying here "If you can find no good then say no bad" Sorry!
My affair with the dCS P8i lasted for one week. Returned to sender, no payment.

Used to own a P8i MkII myself. Recently upgraded to the dCS Puccini, and it feels like it's my longterm keeper, as they say. I use the internal volume control straight into my poweramps. Simply a perfect front-end IMO. Yet I still mull over the addition of the U-Clock!

Do it! Why would you not?

Ditto for me (also the best I've ever heard), and not by a small margin.

Well one day I might get one. A friend of mine has recently upgraded from a Puccini and U-Clock, to a Paganini transport/DAC but retained the U-Clock for use with the new Paganini separates. He says it's sublime! I love my Puccini though, it's enough for me. The clock may come later...

Nagraboy, thought you were going multichannel?

Welcome.
You have just seen how quickly threads deviate from their original post, or in your case, the original question. ;-))
BTW, nice set-up! Post some of the information on your "user details".

I very nearly did Rammie. But in the end I just had to accept that with my room, the rear speakers would have to be too compromised in size and position and it would not really have worked. I'd still like to do it when possible.
I decided to stay 2ch, but rationalise the system by losing the turntable and preamp which never really was a wise decision for me to buy. I then upgraded from the dCS P8i to the dCS Puccini, using its own volume control into my poweramps.
My Nagra valve monoblocks and preamplifier are up for sale with the intention of going back to solid-state for less heat and more convenience. Currently I'm using a Bel Canto Class-D power amplifier as a stop-gap. It's really rather good and will keep me satisfied until I can sell the Nagra pre/power. I may go back to the Nagra MSA MOSFET stereo power amplifier like I used to have, but it's very expensive and I am increasingly interested in mechanical watches, so funds may have to be diverted...
So my system is still 2ch, but much simpler now and all the better for it. Just an SACD player with built-in volume straight into the (fully balanced) power amplifier and onto the very British Harbeth speakers. In a strange twist, since I've made these changes I've had to move to a smaller listening room which has not helped the sound at all. My next purchase therefore, will likely be some top-level STAX earspeakers, of which I've always been a fan, but never able to justify in the past.
Briefly, the dCS Puccini is my ideal source for SACDs. From a practical standpoint the volume control is excellent and the 24/192-capable digital inputs mean I can use other digital sources yet still lose the unnecessary (and expensive) preamplifier. My Cambridge Audio 650BD outputs LPCM from BD, DVD-V/A upto 24/192 as a transport. It's a real hoot to play a DVD-A in the Cambridge then upsample it to DSD in the Puccini! The Puccini also has an Apodizing filter like your Meridian gear as well for use with RBCD, although you can upsample CDs to DSD if you won't to.
So it's a superb player in practical and features terms. The sound? Simply beyond complaint for me. Compared with the P8i, I think it's quite significantly better. The first thing that struck me about the music when I heard the Puccini was the amazingly palpable solidity of instruments. I hadn't expected that at all and it's so much better and more realistic than the P8i (or any other player I've heard for that matter). It uses an identical DAC and processing board and output stage as the flagship Scarlatti. At the top level of SACD reproduction I think it's surely a bargain in that context.
There is so much resolution, without added harshness, that I think effectively the music is just reconstituted with higher accuracy which gives a better representation of the acoustic, the timbre of instruments and the emotion and meaning in music. I'm getting more of everything with the Puccini compared with the dCS P8i or Nagra CDC I used to have. The build quality is also superb with a lovely metal tray Esoteric transport doing the disc-loading duties. The RCA and XLR outputs are separately buffered, so my STAX (when I get them) and usual power amps can both be connected simultaneously without any problems.
This one's a keeper Rammie! At least until I finally go multichannel...lol

Nagraboy....everything in its proper time.
I'm sure the Puccini acting as a preamp also sounds pretty spectacular as another link (the additional pre/pro) has been eliminated.
Because I'm also am avid film buff the surrounds are mandatory for me.
There are some outstanding two channel discs being released by Analogue Productions and I'm sure the Puccini will do them full justice.
Enjoy and when the time comes................
