Now that all my SACD’s are on line orders I am wondering what your experiences are with the intense heat that we are experiencing down south, temperatures are in the 100’s and will most likely remain this high for the next three months.

What is the effect of heat on SACD’s as they sit in hot delivery trucks, does anyone have any thought on this?

The only thought that I have from the UK is "Where on earth do you live, you lucky chap!"

We've not gone above 21C all summer.

CDs appear to be dishwasher proof which is approaching 100C; you're talking about 100F.

I don't think short term heat has any negative effect on optical discs.

In some players, discs can get very hot, warmer than inside a delivery truck in summer. I have never heard of any CD owner whose discs have suffered from heat.

Exposure to direct sunlight is another story.

+100F is the outdoor temperature, out in the open and under a shade tree. Inside a delivery truck it can get mighty hot well over and above 130F.

Polycarbonate is an amorphous solid. It has a glass transition temp of 150 C (the temp at which the solid material will begin to flow albeit very slowly) and a melting temp of 267 C (the temp at which the fluid state is achieved, e.g. the temp used in a molding machine to form discs). You have nothinb to worry about.

I wasn't kidding about the dishwasher, we put one CD through once to see if deep cleansing had any useful effect. It did the music sounded even more ghastly than it did before cleansing. Admittedly it was not one of our cherished recordings having been a freebie from UK Sunday Times some years ago "Massed choirs of the Orkney's sing favourite Yuletide pub songs" or some such....

This is all kind of funny as if summer heat just got invented and never ever existed before.

I've received sacd's in high summer heat and in freezing cold winters. The summer ones never came melted and the winter ones were never frozen.

I also doubt that any of the labels spend much money, if any, to keep their warehouses cool.

They survive my uninsulated flat, without air-conditioning and with bare unprotected NW facing windows, throughout years of Adelaide summers. Yes, Adelaide in summertime! So unless you're storing them in a foundry I reckon they're going to be fine.

As for freezing them... is it time to drag out that old chestnut again?
