Is the HDMI output really disturbing the analog audio? ..... and if it is why have HDMI circuits in an SACD player? .. other than for DVD ... and why would you want video if your interest is superior audio?
Does anyone build a pure SACD player? Maybe Videophiles should switch to Blue Ray and let the luddite audiophiles plod along in the analog world. GRIN. Regards.
I do not think it has anything to do directly with HDMI. It is based on the theory that the video and display circuitry inside the player and/or some AVR/AVPs might cause degradation of the audio. My Oppo player has a Pure Audio setting, but I have yet to hear a discernable difference using it. Personally, I think it may be more of a "feel good" thing, rather than an actual audio advance.
But, you are in a position to know. What are the honest sonic differences using it, trying to avoid any placebo effect?

Placebo effect?
I consider it as being proactive to any internal or external threats.
That said, I do notice a significant difference of SQ in Pure Direct mode.

It may well be equipment dependent, rather than a universal solution.

Looked at a Denon 2900 yesterday and noted a more complex "Pure Direct" switch. Didn't investigate thoroughly but somebody at Denon is "on to something".
As far as my determining subtle "honest sonic differences" I must confess I spent several years of my childhood in/out of B36's, not a good environment for later subtlety in the audio world (GRIN). However, in the interest of science, conversations with progeny and general BS'ing it is a matter for worthy consideration, IMHO. Regards.
