In their September issue, the french Diapason magazine gave this disc the highest recommendation (Diapason d'Or), and 4/5 for the sound quality.

I am curious, was it appraised as an RBCD or as an SACD and if SACD, was the multi-channel layer listened to and commented on?

With (hybrid) SACDs, Diapason has separate sound ratings for the CD and SACD part, the latter concerning the multichannel mix. In this case, they gave 4 out of 5 for both.

I recently acquired the redbook version of the Martinon Debussy (complete orchestral works) set and found it sensational. I will have to add this Japan-SACD version to my wish list.
In listening to the recordings, I recognized the Martinon "Trois Nocturnes" as the one that I referred to in my review of the Deneve set, one that I made a tape recording of 20 years ago (from a record in my uncle's collection), a tape recording (and now redbook recording) that still amazes me and embarasses the Deneve interpretation in every way.

Embarrasses? Why should Deneve feel embarrassed? Is this a challenge or a championship of any kind? Am I missing something?

Daniel Barenboim said something very interesting recently, when he was asked if he felt that he was "saying something new" in his recording of the Chopin Piano Concerti (the first recordings of these works in his career).
He replied, "never mind new, the question is, am I any good?"
I laughed outloud (when I read this). His off the cuff remark revealed something very interesting about the mindset of a performing artist. They strive for absolute mastery...perfection, not just competence. There is a (rather disarming) humbleness in this approach...this quest for playing music in the best possible way (and to the best of one's artistic abilities).
I don't think its a competitive issue. I don't think Barenboim was questioning anyone else's technique (just his own). He's a perfectionist...as most artists are.
I am sure that Stephane Deneve would be very critical of his own recording were he to hear that of Martinon.
