Thread: Why NO more 5.1 Pop SACD Titles from Warners/Japan?

Was just being curious as to why there are NO more announcements from Warners/Japan regarding issue of 5.1 pop titles after the initial batch.

My initial reaction was they were reissuing what already had been available for years in the DVD~A format and had not tread new ground.

That they released the first Doors album in 5.1 (to many negative reviews due to poor surround elements) and to have that title being also re~released by Analogue Productions (using tubed equipment and overseen by original Door's producer Bruce Botnick) may point to possibly AP taking over future Warners SACD releases.

Any feedback on this?

Remixing an album for 5.1 from multitrack masters is a lot of work. The first batch of Warner/Japan reissues reused existing remixes made for DVD-A.

The japanese public doesn't seem to be interested as much in multi-channel sound as the rest of the world. So it's unlikely that Warner are going to do new remixes for that limited market.

I don't think Analogue Productions is going to take over all Warner SACD reissues. They look to the US market and are traditionally interested in certain types of music only (jazz, vintage rock).

But Rammie's right, there are loads of old DVD-A 5.1 masters that could be put onto SACD. And it's a relatively easy way to do it rather than remixing from the original multitrack tapes as you say.

Steely Dan's two latter-day albums would be nice, as would Fagen's Kamakiriad.

Also:

Grateful Dead - American Beauty, Workingman's Dead
The Rat Pack - Live at the Villa Venice
America - Homecoming

And many more. Any suggestions for DVD-As that should make the jump to SACD Rammie?

I concur with Rammiepie: There are far more albums that have already been mixed to 5.1 for DVD-A that could be reissued on SACD. I hadn't realized it but it's become awfully quiet at Warner Japan.

I would suggest the Donald Fagen and Steely Dan albums: Morph the cat, Kamakiriad, Everything Must Go & Two Against Nature.

I really hope the REM ones are remeastered. My DVD-A versions are falling apart. (warner rot. Have any Warner DVD-As? Check 'em.) They used bad glue, or something, for the layers.

Anyways, I would keep my eye on AcousticSounds this year if you are interested in pop/rock SACD; I think it'll be a good year, but I haven't heard much in way of Warner Japan stuff.

Will let folks know when I know.
