If so, where does the conga in the first beats of Tequila came from in your SHM, primarily right or left channel of the stereo layer? Tks!

I own the DVD~A 5.1 of Time Again and it sounds excellent...........sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but I would NOT invest $50+ in the SHM~SACD single~layered stereo only when I can be surrounded for a fraction of the cost.

The price point objection I fully understand (and agree :)). I am not really planning to buy it. I am just curious. I have the SACD version already.

Ok, then, I'll take whatever I can get. When Tequila starts on the DVD-A, in those first few seconds, where is the conga hailing from, left or right?

On my SACD disc the SACD and Reb Book layers have inverted the channels. That conga in Tequila is the easiest way to tell quickly.

Since the [non-SACD] CDs that I have heard also have the same orientation as the Red Book layer, I'd say that the CD version is "right". Thus, I wonder if the SHM SACD version "fixed" this.

Tks!

THe stereo SHM-SACD releases are not remasterings. They are the same DSD files reissued on SHM-SACD discs (polycarbonate formulation, green anti-reflection, rubidium clocking) minus the compressed McH area as per the original release. This is originally AFAIK a 96/24 PCM recording. If you want the "truth" perhaps hunt down the 96/24 download which is available on line or perhaps listenable online also. I think you could even buy this one track if you were desperate.

On the opening bars of "Tequila" the drums come from the left speaker and the congas from the right.

BTW, a really great album......recorded in 5.1 surround and mastered by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles.

Sanborn's own composition "Little Flower" is appropriately serene and the performers on this disc are also pretty amazing: Steve Gadd: d; Christian McBride: b; Russell Malone: g; Mike Mainieri: vibraphone

I personally prefer the surround mix as it is very artfully done without calling attention to itself and places the listener in a wonderful space.

Will definitely visit Timeagain......time and again.

Thanks. Yes, the congas hail from the left on the CD layer and other CDs. However, on the SACD layers they flipped the channels. The congas are on the right. The same thing happens on all tracks.

So, it MAY be that on the SACD SHM version, while using the same masters, they lay the channels correctly.

For someone who does not care much about trivia, this one sure got under my skin!

Yes, the disc is very enjoyable, even after repeatedly listening to it. I only do stereo for now, though I've heard it in surround. On my stereo planar speakers the soundstage is terrific so I keep delaying a proper surround setup for music. The surround speakers work fine for movies but not music at this stage.

Sounds like you need some room treatments in the rear to help focus the sound.......Shakti Holograms and/or Room Tunes work for me. I have a large basement which is an acoustic nightmare and these devices (the Shakti's are $1400 for a pair....the room tunes MUCH less expensive) may help to bring the rears into focus which is necessary for a proper surround set~up.

Experimentation is the key. An audiophile's work is NEVER done.

Rammiepie, what is $1400 worth of treatment expected to fix? If it is the surround part of the system as related to music listening, that's purely by choice.

Bad genes, I guess, but I am still having a blast with stereo. I am a sucker for deep & wide sounstages that project 3D layered imaging extending well outside the walls...even doing a bit of surround at times.

Whenever I feel like listening to SACDs in surround, I go to a friend's place. His system is top-notch for that. In a few years when I have the money and the room to do surround as the Lord commands, then I will.

Still, thanks for the heads up. I will keep it in mind for when the time comes.
