As I've written several times recently, this has been my favorite performance of 'The Planets' for decades. Available initially on LP ASD-3649 and with the same cover pic, I now have it on a couple EMI CDs, numbered CDM 7 64748 2 and 7243 5 67749 2 6, with the latter having the Enigma Variations first on the disc.

I also wrote recently, here and elsewhere, that CHANDOS's newish release with Davis also is excellent and is my favorite multichannel version. It may well turn into my favorite (period).

Both are excellent, and no other version is quite as 'just right'.

We are indeed blessed with many good versions of this masterpiece on disc. Long live choice!

EMI might couple this with his Elgar and release it as a 2SACD SC set in the future. But who knows?
Anyway, here's a helpful review. The reviewer prefers the '66 to this '78.

Am in total agreement with the reviewer's preference for Boult's 1966 recording of The Planets on EMI/Angel with the New Philharmonia and the exquisite London Ambrosian Singers.......one of the most evocatively haunting renditions of Holst's piece I have EVER heard. Hope EMI releases this version on their Signature Label at a nicer price.

Addenda: Just e~mailed EMI and asked them to consider the 1966 Boult Planets for a possible Signature Series SACD release. It really is that spectacular!
