I just got this recording, and while the technical spec sheet on Glossa's page for this shows it as a 5.0 recording, the copy I just received is either 4.0 or the center doesn't work. Yes, the very first thing I did was check that my equipment was working correctly, and it is. There is absolutely NOT a center channel on my pressing of this. Do people know whether this is even a possible pressing fault with SACDs?

Such a fault is possible in production as was demonstrated by an SACD that had the center and right channel flipped. OTOH, it is possible that the tech sheet is in error.

Thanks Kal - I have contacted Glossa (via facebook!) and we will see whether they reply!

Hi Wilbur,
When I reviewed this disc in 2007 (Rachmaninov: The Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom - Flemish Radio Choir) I was so immersed in listening to the music that I didn't "police" the alleged 5.0 channel system by putting an ear to each of the speakers. I've re-checked, and like you I can't detect any sound from the centre. Sometimes this is used for ambience rather than primary imaging, if so then it is virtually inaudible. Since my copy was one of the original release run, it seems as though there may have been a mastering fault, dropping the centre channel. It still sounds magnificent though, the large ambient space is well projected and the front image of the choir is solidly imaged by the front left and right speakers. I've changed my review to mention the lack of a centre channel.

Do let us know if you hear from Glossa!

Regards,
John

John - just put my review up which updates the Glossa info. They did offer to send me one of their other SACDs for free (although such has not arrived yet!!). Best - Bill

Well done! Not all record companies will answer consumer questions, and good for Glossa in offering a sort of compensation for your notice of a missing centre channel. I shall have to start putting an ear on the centre channel again!

Regards,
John

John - I did get the promised free Cd from Glossa, which is great. Glossa still list it as 5.0 on their website, however, despite their acknowledgement to the contrary!
