I reviewed Turnstiles on Amazon and I stand by those comments. The sound quality of the MOFI release is substandard.

Interesting to see such extreme reviews on this SACD - either "best version I've heard" or as in this case "worst!".

I have it on the way, and am intrigued, though unfortunately will have no other version to compare to. Should I be expecting a 2.5 for sound? (somewhere in the middle?)

I think such extremes of view show that equipment and personal preferences play an enormous role in our ratings of albums, and absolute statements on sonics need to be taken with a large grain of salt (regardless of how good someone may think their equipment is).

I hope you liked it and would be interested in your thoughts. I have it and it sounds good to my ears. Good definition. Bass is ok. Mids and highs are not overcooked. The more I listen the better I like it. I would buy it again.

Hey discspinner.

I have no problem with the sound, though I haven't listened particularly critically. No other recordings to compare to, but I certainly wouldn't call it a poor recording.

Mine arrived this week and I think it sounds fine. Not the best on SACD but far from the worst.

I have to agree, I have just received my copy on 180 gram vinyl and it was the same. In fact my copy of INXS's Kick is the same, the sound is really tinny in the top end. On Turnstiles, Billy Joel's voice does'nt sound right. Like yourself I have heaps of the older MOFI LP's and they were the standard.

I bought this disc a few weeks ago, pretty much on impulse, after owning the MoFi 'Piano Man' for a couple of weeks. The first listen set me back, expecting at least as good as 'Piano Man', and perhaps a bit better. But slowly, over the past couple of weeks I've developed more appreciation for it. The sonic limitations are obvious compared to so many other works, but the material is close to me, and at this point I have no regrets for making the purchase. It's bound to beat the hell out of any red book. I imagine that what we have is pretty close to the source material.

I'm new to this forum, and not exactly an SACD sage, either. Without digging through many past threads, does anybody know why MoFi skipped over 'Streetlife Serenade'? Though it wasn't a big seller for Joel back in the day, it seems there would have been enough appreciation for it within MoFi's customer base.
