Tried, in vain, to tell the Onkyo HDMI>Amp but all it asks is: "HDMI out YES or No." When I press No, the video display goes blank but the OPPO outputs DSD (only when video display is OFF) and when I don't it reverts to a DSP mode. What oh what am I doing wrong? Is there possibly another solution, Kal?

Which Onkyo? I have used only the Integra 9.8 (equivalent to the Onkyo 885) and the Integra 80.2 (equivalent to the Onkyo 5508).

I can understand that you are annoyed and impatient but I think you are over-reacting to my attempt at clarification.

Kal

Impatient ?...NO....annoyed ?....to a degree....clarification ?...incorrect, due to the fact that you misread my post. Progress ?...sarcasm. At least you didn't type 10 ?????????? !!

I've answered my own question

• When playing DSD signals in the DIRECT or PURE DIRECT mode, the DSD signals are converted as such into analog signals. When playing in other surround modes, the DSD signals are first converted into PCM format, then into analog signals.
• “DSD DIRECT” is shown on the display when playing DSD 2-channel signals in the DIRECT mode. “DSD MULTI DIRECT” is shown on the display when playing DSD multi--channel signals in the DIRECT mode.

So the Denon cant add DSP or time delay without PCM conversion either.

Couldn't see what resolution this would be at. Any idea?

Yes, the better Denons, including their prepro, do that, as does my Integra prepro from HDMI input. But, in no way do I prefer the sound with direct DSD to analog conversion. It is greatly preferred with internal conversion to PCM and use of DSP functionality, especially Audyssey EQ. That is true even in stereo where DSP speaker distance compensation does not come into play.

When i switched on the units this morning, it had reverted back to TV + AMP, for some reason, so i switched it back, and it's fine again.

Its entirely possible although unlikely that your unit could have an internal fault where it doesnt remember the previous settings and reverts to its factory settings after being switched off. Maybe even the TV itself is sending an unwanted signal down the HDMI connected between amp and tv which is causing the amp to switch. Certainly its not a satisfactory solution to keep having to remember to switch back to AMP all the time.
My current Yamaha reciever has a section in its internal menu which basically " locks " all settings made ( thus stopping little hands or wives screwing it all up LOL )I wonder if the Sony you have has something similar?

A thought has come into my head ( yes I know its rare LOL ) but if your Sony is 3D capable via HDMI does it also have audio return ( ARC ) feature?. I suspect it probably does, most 1.4a HDMI ( thus 3D ) amps would have this function. I wonder if it is something you can deactivte in the Sony set up, perhaps the audio return channel is causing the switching? I think your TV would also have to be ARC compatible for this to happen might be worth swapping the HDMI cable from the amp to the TV into one of the TVs none ARC HDMI sockets ( usually only one HDMI is so enabled and it will have ARC printed next to the actual HDMI socket on the back of the TV ). Give that a try, swapping the HDMI input socket to the TV and see if that cures the problem ( ie if you are using say HDMI1 use HDMI 2, 3 or 4 depending on how many you have on your TV of course).

Hello Steve, ( Yoro )

Thank you for your latest advice. I haven't got round to deactivating the HD DCS, but i'm happy with the sound...i definitely have multi channel now. This afternoon, i swithched on the amp & player, and it was fine. Then i switched on the TV and the sound disappeared for a few seconds, came back on and reverted what it use to be ! Had to go back into the menu to change back to AMP again.
The receiver is 3D, and i do recall reading about ARC. It's a Sony TV, ( which my brother gave to me ) I actually think there's only one HDMI connection on it ? Will have a look in the book, but i think i will have to give up on dragging my storage unit out to have a look e.t.c. ( i'm severely disabled ) It knocked me about setting the equipment up, i'll have to see if i can get a friend to have a look sometime. Thanks again.

Rob.

PS. I may be able to swivel the TV round & have a look.

My guess is, if the TV has only one HDMI socket then its unlikely to have an ARC capable input, thus you have probably answered the question LOL Generally only the most up to date TV's will have an ARC HDMI and its rare to find a TV these days with less than 2 HDMIs unless its a tiny bedroom set. I think all 3D plasmas/LCD/LED sets will have 1 ARC HDMI. I must assume your Sony TV ( you really like Sony dont you! LOL ) must be about 2 years old or more? Ah well that saved you pulling your back out if nothing else LOL.
Back to the drawing board I guess, ah well it was a long shot really. Still it is very strange and I can only assume the HDMI link to the TV is responsible especially given the symptoms described when turning the TV on.
Well you got me well and truely stumped, anybody else have a suggestion? If I could see the user manual onlne I'd check it out but Sony in their wisdom dont allow it anymore : ( It must be an receiver setting then.

It does appear to have only 1 HDMI ( it's definitely older than 2 years ! ) It's not a major problem, i was more bothered by the fact, that i thought i'd have to have my TV on all the time, i was playing my music ! It's no problem to go into the menu, now i know what to do.
I'm just pleased i've got the multi channel working now. I've been listening the wrong way for 3 months, it was a little bit disorientating yesterday, at first..even though i was used to the sound from my old set up. ( that's why i knew something wasn't right ! ) It sounds great !

I can buy the argument that the room correction improvements more than make up for DSD to PCM conversion, which if done at 176Knhz could well be inaudible.

So is the the Integra preamp everyone is talking about badged as an Onkyo - is it as good or a cheaper version?

Thanks, I will investigate.

I received my copy of "Wish You Were Here" SACD yesterday.

It is a surround sound masterpiece! I had two friends around to listen phrases like "Oh My God" (at the beginning of "Welcome...) "Completely 3 dimensional", awesome etc.

This just shows what the MP3 loving world is missing!
