I also would like to see Love over Gold released. However, as far as I know, the masters were also recorded on 16/44, like Brothers in Arms so, yes there would be an improvement but it still wouldn't compare with an analogue, or modern digital, master.

1982's Love Over Gold was Dire Straits last analog recording, 1985's Brothers In Arms their first digital recording and one of the first rock DDD recordings released on CD.
I have the Warner 180-gram reissue of "Love Over Gold" mastered by Bernie Grundman and it's my favorite Dire Straits recording both musically and sonically. There is also a pricey Universal-Japan SACD Dire Straits: Love Over Gold

I think the only "first" that "Brothers in Arms" made (outside the Dire Straits discography) was being the first pop album to be released simultaneously on LP and CD. They made a huge hype with that at the time, the band posing with CDs and all. The Vertigo label was owned by Philips.

Since the CD format launch in March 1983 (Europe) and until "Brothers in Arms", all new pop albums were released on LP first and on CD some time later only (if at all), and most of the first CD releases were reissues (among them Abba "The Visitors", which is also a digital recording, but released on LP first)

If not only 'Brothers in Arms' but also 'The Visitors' like you mention was released on CD in 1985 (and I think you're right here) I may have one album that was recorded digitally and perhaps issued earlier: 'Body and Soul' by Joe Jackson (see /showthread/47910). I recall it being one of the earlier CDs and for all I can see it must have been out in 1984. It proudly boasts "Digital Recording".

The first CD format which defined the music CD that could be played in all standalone CD players was called CD Digital Audio, CD-DA or just CD-A. The specifications for the CD-A format were set out in the 1980 "red book" standard developed by Philips and Sony. The Red Book standard specifies the data format for digital audio and the technical specifications for devices and media.

OK, thank you very much Thom! This is an abbreviation that I didn't know yet. If JW would have written first pressing or first mastering (1985) if would have been clear immediately.

Amazon US is listing this title as an import from Universal UK, and the price is appealing, but different from the other two listed here from Vertigo. I don't find a reference here for an edition from Universal UK. Anybody have an opinion about the disc?
This is an interesting turn, because the price was rather steep in the past. I don't remember if the expensive listings were this particular edition, but it was an import.
